Lubis solid Elm and Oak 2-Seater Settee, South Africa, c. 1960s

The spindle back that made Ercol famous — interpreted for the South African market by Lubis, and every bit as charming for it.

Lubis produced furniture in South Africa during the mid-century period closely modelled on the iconic British Ercol designs — the same turned spindle back, the same solid elm and oak construction, the same honest, unpretentious character that has made the Ercol aesthetic so enduringly collectible. Original Lubis pieces are increasingly sought after in their own right, and rightly so.

This settee has been thoroughly restored in our workshop. The frame was stripped back from a heavy dark stain and brought as close as possible to the original light wood tone — a process that rewards patience and reveals the grain beautifully. New webbing throughout. The seat cushion has been newly upholstered in a soft duck-egg blue Hertex fabric with new high-density foam — a linen-look weave that sits comfortably in both contemporary and period interiors. The spindle back has been left intentionally un-upholstered to showcase the woodwork at its best.
