Liceu de Artes e Ofícios — Solid Brazilian Rosewood Four-Seat Sofa, Brazil, c.1960's
An exceptionally rare, collectable and imposing four-seat sculptural sofa produced by Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, São Paulo, Brazil, circa 1960s. Large-scale Brazilian modernist seating of this calibre and provenance appears infrequently on the market; this example is among the most architecturally resolved expressions of the form.
The frame is carved from solid Brazilian rosewood (jacaranda palisander) — a wood of exceptional density and figure, its grain ranging from deep chocolate to warm reddish-brown with striking ochre veining throughout. The rear legs describe a confident outward arc, lending the silhouette a sense of movement and structural tension entirely at odds with the sofa's apparent lightness. The front legs are upright and square, anchoring the form. Between them, an open slatted backrest — generously spaced and visually airy — runs the full length of the piece, with winged end panels that frame the composition and add to its sculptural presence. The sculpted armrests taper and curve with a fluency that speaks directly to the Brazilian modernist tradition — a lineage that absorbed Scandinavian rationalism and filtered it through the country's own material culture and craft heritage.
A significant artefact of Brazilian modernism: rare, and beautifully constructed.
About Liceu de Artes e Ofícios
Founded in São Paulo in 1873 by a group of prominent coffee merchants, Liceu de Artes e Ofícios was established to advance Brazil's industrial and cultural development through technical and artistic education. By 1880 it had grown into a fully integrated institution, offering instruction across crafts, design, and furniture making — drawing on the influence of respected architects including Bettencourt da Silva and Ramos de Azevedo, both of whom served as directors.
Housed in a building designed by Ramos de Azevedo — also the architect behind São Paulo's Theatro Municipal — the school's in-house workshops produced furniture and fittings for prestigious commissions across Brazil. Its pieces are now recognised as significant artefacts of Brazilian modernism: rare, beautifully constructed, and rooted in a tradition that combined European craft education with the country's extraordinary native hardwoods.

Condition Report
Presented in good vintage condition. The solid Brazilian rosewood frame has been professionally restored and refinished, highlighting the remarkable depth, figuring, and tonal variation of the wood while preserving the integrity of the original design.
The current upholstery — an off-white bouclé-textured fabric — remains in very good presentable condition and sits well against the depth of the rosewood.
The sofa has undergone professional structural repair and reinforcement to the central rear support following historic movement-related damage. During restoration, evidence of earlier historic interventions to the underside/frame was noted, consistent with a piece of this age. The repair was completed conservatively to retain as much originality as possible.
The sofa is currently stable and presents beautifully for careful domestic use, however we would recommend careful handling and considered use going forward. As with many rare sculptural Brazilian modernist pieces of this nature and age, excessive impact, rough handling, or concentrated stress should be avoided, and the piece is best suited to a considered interior setting or collector environment.
Minor historic wear, restorations, and age-related imperfections remain present and consistent with the authenticity and vintage nature of the piece.
