Set of Six Beech Dining Chairs by Hugo Troeds, Sweden, 1950s
Each back carries the detail that defines the set: three splats that rise from the lower rail as flat tapered paddles before dividing into slender forks that meet the crest rail — a lightness rarely found in dining seating of the period. The set comprises four side chairs and two carvers in pale blond beech, with gently splayed legs joined by stretchers and softly shaped crest rails. Seats are upholstered in a pale sage woven fabric that sets off the timber's honeyed tone. The original Hugo Troeds, Bjärnum maker's plaque is retained.
About the maker
Troeds was founded in Bjärnum, southern Sweden, in 1934 by Svea and Hugo Troedsson. Through the 1950s and 60s the firm worked with designers including Nils Jonsson and, occasionally, Yngve Ekström, and its dining furniture — predominantly in teak — exported widely, selling particularly well in Britain. Beech examples such as these are the less commonly seen side of the firm's output, the pale timber giving classic Troeds design a lighter, distinctly Swedish character.
