Original Danish Modern Teak Credenza by Dammand & Rasmussen

R35,800.00Price
  • A beautifully proportioned Danish teak sideboard by Dammand & Rasmussen, made in Viby J, Denmark in the 1960s. The piece carries the Danish Furniture Makers' Quality Control stamp — original and verifiable — and showcases the restrained architectural clarity that defined the best of Scandinavian cabinetmaking during this period.

The façade features book-matched teak grain panels alongside vertically mounted raised rectangular teak pulls — a subtle, distinctive detail that gives the model its character. The interior is thoughtfully arranged: adjustable shelving on one side, and a pull-out tray lined in green baize on the other — a practical and considered touch typical of well-made Danish furniture of the era.

Raised on slender tapered legs, the piece sits lightly in a room while offering generous storage. It works equally well as a media console, dining room sideboard, or a clean-lined focal point in an entry or living space.

The piece presents beautifully with a rich, even tone and a smooth protective finish that highlights the natural warmth of the teak.

Light, age-appropriate signs of use remain visible upon close inspection, consistent with the piece’s mid-century origins, but nothing that detracts from its refined presentation. Overall, a superb example of this sought-after model.

As with all vintage pieces, light signs of age and use are to be expected.

Designer Bio — Dammand & Rasmussen

Dammand & Rasmussen was a Danish furniture manufacturer active through the mid-20th century, known for producing refined, well-crafted pieces that embodied the principles of Danish modernism. Their work is characterised by clean lines, warm teak tones, excellent construction quality and a focus on functional design.

The company’s sideboards and lowboards are especially prized today for their balanced proportions, beautifully grained teak panels and distinctive recessed wooden pulls — subtle details that define their aesthetic. Though less widely known than some of the larger Danish manufacturers, Dammand & Rasmussen produced furniture of a consistently high standard, making their pieces highly sought-after by collectors of authentic Scandinavian design.

The piece carries two marks that matter. The "dr" manufacturer's label confirms the maker and origin. The second — the round Danish Furniture Makers' Quality Control stamp — is the more significant of the two. Established in 1959, the Danish Furnituremakers' Control was a voluntary certification system created to protect Denmark's reputation in export markets. Participation required adherence to strict technical standards and biannual factory inspections — only the most reputable manufacturers were permitted to carry the mark.  That Dammand & Rasmussen earned and displayed it is a straightforward statement of where they stood.

In the vintage market, the Danish Furniture Makers' Control stamp is valued as a sign of authenticity and a hallmark of the golden age of Danish Modern.  On this credenza, both marks are original and intact — visible proof that what you are buying is exactly what it appears to be.

Like many well-made mid-century pieces, this one combines solid wood with a quality veneer — a considered choice of the era, used to showcase the finest grain while ensuring the piece moves and settles as the timber intends.

As expected with vintage pieces, there is a degree of age-related patina.
