Mid-Century Imbuia Coffee Table, Attributed to Airflex — South Africa, c. 1960s
A generous and architecturally resolved coffee table in solid and veneered imbuia, attributed to celebrated South African manufacturer Airflex during their mid-century peak. The elongated surfboard top — deeply rounded at each corner — is supported on two broad slab legs of considerable depth and weight, united by a low stretcher that anchors the composition without visual interruption. The imbuia grain reads well across the full width of the top.

Airflex was a prominent South African furniture manufacturer, particularly active in the mid-20th century. They were known for producing high-quality lounge and dining furniture, often working with local hardwoods like Imbuia and Kiaat. Their designs drew influence from international modernist trends, especially Scandinavian and American mid-century modern styles, but were interpreted through a distinctly South African lens. Pieces by Airflex are appreciated today for their durability, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance.
Imbuia is not listed in the CITES Appendices, but is classified as “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Condition Report
Presented in gently restored condition, it has been carefully refinished in our workshop. The grain and warmth of the wood now fully legible. Structure throughout is sound and stable.
As with all authentic mid-century pieces, gentle signs of age remain and are considered part of their character.
