Jentique Teak Sideboard, England, c. 1960s
A British Mid-Century Sideboard — Scandinavian Sensibility, English Craft
A beautifully resolved example of British mid-century design by Jentique Furniture — a maker that distinguished itself during the late 1950s and 1960s by translating the refined principles of Danish modernism into thoughtfully crafted, accessible forms for the post-war English home.
The composition is balanced and unhurried: three central drawers — the top drawer retaining its original felt-lined cutlery insert — flanked by two sliding-door cupboard compartments, offering a practical space-saving advantage. The detail that elevates the piece is its handles — elliptical, carved, and deeply inset rather than applied — an organic sculptural note. The warm teak surfaces, with their natural ribbon-grain variation, provide all the ornament the design requires.
Raised on elegantly tapered legs, the sideboard sits lightly for its scale — equally suited to a dining room, a living space, or a considered hallway setting.
Maker Profile — Jentique Furniture Ltd (England)
Jentique Furniture Ltd was a British manufacturer active during the mid-20th century, its origins rooted in the enterprising career of founder Geoffrey Jenkins — a maker whose early ventures included a gramophone that proved far more successful than his ill-fated hydraulic toothbrush, and which led him naturally toward the discipline of furniture production.
During the late 1950s and 1960s, Jentique capitalised on Britain's growing appetite for the clean, functional aesthetic of Danish modernism, producing a range of teak furniture that combined thoughtful proportions, practical layouts, and solid craftsmanship. While not designer-led in the manner of their Scandinavian contemporaries, Jentique pieces are recognised for their understated elegance and enduring build quality.
Today, Jentique furniture is increasingly appreciated by collectors and interior enthusiasts as an accessible and characterful entry point into the mid-century aesthetic.
All Vintage Club pieces are carefully considered for authenticity, provenance, and condition before acquisition. Restoration is undertaken in-house to the highest standard.
