Mid-Century 'Uncle Tom' Rocking Chair — Frystark, 1960s

Available singly — one in solid mahogany, one in solid Imbuia — or as a pair.

A beautifully made South African answer to a Danish icon. Frystark — a South African maker celebrated for craftsmanship steeped in Scandinavian design — produced this rocker, affectionately known as the 'Uncle Tom', closely after Frank Reenskaug's Model 182 for Bramin (Denmark, 1958). Worked in warm solid mahogany or, on its companion, Imbuia rather than teak, it keeps the architectural X-frame, the spindle back and the gently curved runners, while the deep local colour of the wood gives it a character entirely its own. A handsome, comfortable chair and a quietly collectible piece of local design history.

Danish original, or local homage? We believe in being clear: this is a South African–made tribute to a Danish classic, not the designer original. That's part of its charm — and it's reflected in the price.

(See our quick guide below for how the two differ.)

How it compares to the Danish original
Our Frystark 'Uncle Tom' is a South African tribute to Frank Reenskaug's Model 182 for Bramin (Denmark, 1958). For the collectors among you, here's how the two differ:

  • Wood — Danish: solid teak · Frystark: solid mahogany or imbuia
  • Joint screws — Danish: two at the leg stretchers and two at the backrest, Allen (hex) head · Frystark: one at the leg stretcher and two at the rear of the armrests, slotted
  • Joinery & finish — Danish: crisper rounded leg-frame joints, finer overall finish · Frystark: very good craftsmanship, a slightly heavier hand
  • Maker's mark — Danish: Bramin paper label, often lost over time (not present on ours); confirmed against documented examples · Frystark: Frystark
  • Provenance — Danish: Danish designer original · Frystark: South African  period homage
