A sculptural set of four side tables produced by Bakker & Steyger, South Africa, in the 1960s — a set that captures the playful yet refined approach to form that defined the country's mid-century cabinetmaking at its best.

Each table carries a distinct organic silhouette, from softly rounded forms to elongated, free-flowing shapes — two of them reading as interlocking commas, their curves nesting into a single fluid form when paired. The asymmetrical outlines and gently tapered legs lend each piece a sense of movement and lightness, while a shared visual language holds the set together. Arrange them as a single dynamic composition, or let them drift individually through a room.

Bakker & Steyger was a Cape Town furniture manufacturer based in Lansdowne, established in 1939 and active through the mid-century decades. The firm produced finely made dining suites, sideboards, settees and occasional pieces — work that drew on the international modernist vocabulary of the period while retaining a distinctly South African character. Pieces are now sought after as part of a growing appreciation for local mid-century design.
