Rare and Iconic ‘Status Range’ Sideboard by Frystark, South Africa, 1960s
A beautifully proportioned and elegantly designed mid-century sideboard by Frystark, part of their sought-after ‘Status’ Danish-inspired range produced in South Africa during the 1960s.
Frystark's Status range was advertised as being "as beautiful from the back as from the front" — and this example bears it out, the reverse finished to the same standard as the façade so the piece can stand free as a room divider. Clean lines throughout: two sliding doors with sculpted recessed pulls, a bank of four drawers with integrated angled finger pulls that keep the front uninterrupted, all carried on the tapered legs that mark the range.
The top drawer is baize-lined and divided for cutlery, with its lock in working order and the original key present. Ribbon-striped sapele mahogany veneer over a solid frame, showing the refined joinery for which Frystark became known.
At 190 cm it holds a long wall with ease, and the finished back opens up the option of floating it in an open-plan room.
A fine example of South Africa’s modernist design heritage, inspired by the simplicity and functionality of Danish modernism.
Frystark
Founded in 1948 by brothers Derek and Owen Frye, the business gained country-wide reach in 1959 through a merger with G.H. Starck Ltd of Cape Town and their Ndabeni factory — D and O Frye, Starck & Co. Ltd, shortened in daily use to Frystark. Through the 1960s the company stood among South Africa's leading modern furniture makers, working to Scandinavian design principles with the shape and build quality that made its name. AFCOL took over in 1968, turning production toward the more conservative Unita ranges and closing the classic mid-century chapter.
