Danish Teak Bed with Floating Nightstands, 1960s

A quietly resolved piece of Danish bedroom design: a wide teak headboard carrying two suspended nightstands, each with a single drawer, floating clear of the floor. The frame breaks down via its original hinged headboard fittings — a thoughtful period detail that made these beds exportable, and makes this one easy to move today. Low footboard, solid teak tapered legs, and beautifully figured teak veneers throughout.

The frame takes a 169 × 190 cm mattress — Danish sizing, slightly wider than a local queen. Two easy routes: a custom mattress, which local manufacturers make to order without fuss, or a standard SA queen with a foam batten dropped in either side to close the 8.5 cm gap. The slat platform runs the full width of the frame, so the battens sit flush and disappear entirely under bedding.
