In the late 1950s, the North Carolina-based Drexel Furniture Company teamed up with designer John Van Koert on a line of contemporary home furnishings. Van Koert had been the exhibitions director for the influential “Design in Scandinavia” show that toured the U.S. from 1954 to 1957, and was one of the designers responsible for introducing Danish Modern furniture to American homes. He was an early advocate of built-in furniture, popular in the 1950’s, saying “we shouldn’t have to move our furniture when we move”. Van Koert started his career as a jewelry designer after WW2, working for the famous New York jeweler Harry Winston. He later branched out into industrial design, creating some of the most desirable furniture of the era. The 'Profile' series featured a number of designs in which the Drexel catalogue makes special note of the beautifully conceived drawer pulls.
