  • Mid-Century Duros (SA) Sapele and Mahogany sideboard.

A beautifully crafted and designed Mid-century sideboard manufactured by South African furniture leader, Duros, during the mid-20th century. Timeless design. It has a drinking cabinet, five drawers, and sliding doors enclosing an adjustable shelf, 'floating' on beautifully sculpted tapered legs.

    Dimensions: Length 182cm x Depth 45.5cm x Height 78cm.

Condition: Overall very good vintage condition. Light wear consistent with age. It has been meticulously cleaned and refinished with multiple coats of high-quality Danish oil. The fall front door has no lock, it has been removed and filled by the previous owner. Please see photos for detail. The key serves as a 'handle' for both the top drawer and drinking cabinet. It was also previously stripped and lightly sanded and sealed to reveal the beautiful Ribbon Sapele grain.

A great sideboard that will stand the test of time.

Duros, established in 1904 represented Danish modern style in South Africa. The name Duros was a composite of the Latvian emigrant family name OSpovat and "DURablity".

The Duros furniture company opened it’s doors in Chapel Street, Woodstock in 1903, moved to Roeland Street in the 1930’s and remained there until it’s demise in the 1980’s. It had an impressive range of furniture

Duros founder Hyman Ospovat gave the company a slogan taken from John Keats: “A thing of beauty is a joy for ever”. Looking at how timeless his furniture pieces are, it’s rather accurate.

As with most mid-century pieces, it is a good combination of solid wood & a high-quality wood veneer.
