Frystark “Status” Sideboard in Burma Teak

South Africa, 1960s

A stamped example from Frystark’s Status range, the South African maker’s finest expression of Danish design principles.

It carries every hallmark of the range: book-matched veneer running warm and even across two sliding doors, a bank of four drawers with sculpted recessed pulls that define the range, and raised on the maker's signature turned tapered legs. The book-matched veneer runs warm and even across the door fronts, with the grain carried through to a solid, unbroken top.

At 182 cm it suits a dining room or a long living-room wall. Behind the doors is an adjustable shelf, and the top drawer is lined in green baize and divided for cutlery. The range was designed to be seen from every side. Frystark’s own catalogue suggested these sideboards could stand as room dividers, since “they look as good from the back as they do from the front.” The finished reverse on this example bears that out.

Stamped to the drawer interior with the maker’s mark and quality-control pass. Restored and refinished in-house.

About the maker

Brothers Derek and Owen Frye began manufacturing furniture in Port Elizabeth in 1948, sourcing their veneers, oils and design direction from Europe. In 1959 they merged with G.H. Starck Ltd of Cape Town, moving production to the Starck factory in Ndabeni and gaining national distribution under the name D. and O. Frye, Starck & Co., shortened to Frystark. Through the 1960s the company was among the most accomplished furniture makers in South Africa, building to Danish design principles with a standard of cabinetmaking that has held up considerably better than most of its contemporaries’. When AFCOL acquired the group in 1968, production shifted to the more conservative Unita ranges, ending Frystark’s classic mid-century era. Status range pieces in this condition are increasingly difficult to find.

All Vintage Club pieces are carefully considered for authenticity, provenance and condition before acquisition. Restoration is undertaken in-house to the highest standard.

Maker: Frystark

Period: 1960s

Materials: Burma teak, book-matched veneer on solid frame

Dimensions: L 182 × D 46 × H 77 cm

Condition Report

Very good, and remarkably well preserved for its age. Restored and refinished in-house using high-quality materials. Light historic marking remains to the top. The drawer interiors keep their original, untouched surfaces, including the baize-lined divided top drawer. The sliding doors run smoothly, and a lock escutcheon is present on the left-hand door. As with all authentic mid-century pieces, gentle signs of age remain and are considered part of their character. Please refer to the photographs for a closer look.
