  • A beautifully proportioned and elegantly designed mid-century sideboard by Frystark, part of their sought-after ‘Status’ Danish-inspired range produced in South Africa during the 1960s.

The design features clean Scandinavian lines with sliding doors and four drawers set on the signature tapered legs. The drawers are finished with sculpted recessed pulls, and the top drawer is lined and divided for cutlery. It has a beautiful russet Sapele Mahogany veneer finish and solid frame, the piece reflects the refined joinery and craftsmanship for which Frystark became known.

During the 1960s, Frystark stood among South Africa’s leading modern furniture makers, producing high-quality pieces influenced by Scandinavian design principles. The Status Range was advertised as being “as beautiful from the back as from the front,” allowing the sideboards to be used as room dividers—a hallmark of true modernist design thinking.

A fine example of South Africa’s modernist design heritage, inspired by the simplicity and functionality of Danish modernism, and exceptionally rare to find in such well-preserved vintage condition.

Frystark furniture is renowned for its beautiful shape and high-quality manufacturing with a strongly influenced by Mid-Century Modern Danish and European design.

“In 1948 two brothers, Derek & Owen Frye, started their furniture manufacturing business. The business grew and in 1959 it acquired country-wide distribution through its merger with G.H. Starck Itd. of Cape Town and their furniture factory in Ndabeni. Known as D and O Frye, Starck & co. Ltd. - shortened for easy reference to the Frystark Group. Frystark was taken over by A.F.C.O.L (Associated Furniture Companies Limited) in 1968 which effectively ended the era of classic Mid-Century Modern Frystark furniture in favor of the more conservative Unita ranges."
