Classic 1960s Mid-Century Modern Scandinavian Teak Secretary Desk by AB Bröderna Gustafssons, Sweden
Vintage Swedish Secrétaire by Bröderna Gustafssons
This elegant secretary desk showcases the refined simplicity and functionality of Swedish mid-century modern design. Produced by AB Bröderna Gustafssons in the 1960s, it combines clean architectural lines with practical storage solutions, characteristic of Scandinavian modernism.
The front features two full-width drawers of differing heights, fitted with recessed circular pulls in solid teak, combining utility with a distinctive design detail. One drawer is lockable, with the original key included. A pull-out writing surface extends to create a generous workspace, while positioned just above it are two smaller drawers. These are complemented by finely crafted wooden dividers and a pair of open compartments on the left, highlighting the desk’s intricate carpentry and thoughtful design.
This compact yet efficient layout offers both rhythm in its composition and thoughtful practicality.
The design is not only highly functional but also visually striking, making it a versatile piece suitable for any room in the home.
This model is believed to have been designed by Egon Östergaard, whose work remains celebrated for its elegant balance of form and function.
The Gustafsson brothers became known for producing well-proportioned furniture that embodied the Scandinavian ethos of form meeting function. This design reflects the balance of simplicity, craftsmanship, and subtle detail that defines the era.

We have carefully refurbished and refinished this piece to preserve the heritage.AB Bröderna Gustafssons (Gustavsson Brothers) was a Swedish furniture manufacturer active in the mid-20th century, especially the 1950s and 1960s. Founded circa 1936 in Hultarp, Sweden, the brothers built a reputation for elegant, functional Scandinavian design rooted in craftsmanship and thoughtful mechanics. Their signature pieces include roll-top secretaries, sliding-panel desks, and finely veneered storage units. Collaborating with designers such as Egon Østergaard, Bröderna Gustafssons perfected the balance between form and utility. Today, their pieces are prized by collectors and admirers of mid-century design for their timeless proportions, refined detailing, and enduring quality.
As with many quality Mid-Century pieces, this design thoughtfully pairs solid wood construction with a premium wood veneer—an approach widely used at the time to highlight beautiful grain patterns while ensuring lasting stability.
