A compact and characterful writing desk of South African origin, produced by Frystark during the 1960s. The form is clean and unpretentious — a generous work surface, three drawers to one side, and four elegantly tapered legs that give the piece a lightness belying its solid construction.
The original brass pulls on the lower two drawers are intact and add an honest period note.
An accessible and versatile piece — well suited to a home study, or a considered corner of a living interior.

About Frystark
Frystark furniture is renowned for its beautiful shape and high-quality manufacturing with a strongly influenced by Mid-Century Modern Danish and European design.
“In 1948 two brothers, Derek & Owen Frye, started their furniture manufacturing business. The business grew and in 1959 it acquired country-wide distribution through its merger with G H Starck Ltd, opening a factory in Ndabeni, Cape Town. Known as D and O Frye, Starck & co. Ltd. - shortened for easy reference to the Frystark Group.
Working primarily in Burma teak during the 1960s, they produced furniture that drew directly on Scandinavian modernist principles — clean lines, honest materials, and careful construction. Frystark continued into the late 1960s when it was sold to AFCOL (Associated Furniture Companies Limited), who moved it into mass production, effectively ending the classic era of the brand. The original factory pieces from the 1960s are now genuinely collectible and increasingly hard to find.

Condition Report
Presented in gently restored condition. The desk has been carefully refinished in our workshop. The tapered legs are sound and present beautifully. Minor veneer loss to one corner of the top has been professionally repaired with matching veneer and is barely discernible
As with all authentic mid-century pieces, gentle signs of age remain and are considered part of their character.
