Extendable Teak dining table with five chairs by Duros, South Africa, 1960s

Mid-century extendable Teak dining table with five chairs by Duros

R0.00Price
  • An elegant mid-century dining suite by Duros, one of South Africa’s leading modernist furniture makers. This beautifully made set includes a sculptural round-to-oval extendable dining table paired with five matching dining chairs, all showcasing the refined, understated aesthetic for which Duros is known.

The table features a lightly floating top supported by elegantly sculpted conical, tapered legs, giving the piece a light, elevated presence. Its cleverly engineered mechanism allows the top to slide apart smoothly, revealing a folding butterfly leaf that converts the table from a compact round form to an oval six-seater configuration. The top is finished in richly toned Teak, displaying a warm, beautiful grain that enhances its clean, modern silhouette.

The five accompanying dining chairs echo the table’s sculptural language. Each chair features a curved bent-ply backrest finished in Teak, paired with solid teak frames and elegant tapered legs. Their original tan leather-cloth upholstery adds an authentic period character, complementing the warmth of the wood.

Together, the suite presents a cohesive and beautifully balanced dining setting — a refined example of South African modernism at its best.

    Condition Report

    Presented in good vintage condition.

    Table

    • Structurally sound and stable.
    • Gently refurbished & refinished while preserving the character.
    • A discreet underside repair was required where a structural element was missing and has been professionally remade in solid teak to match the original construction, ensuring full stability. The table edge previously displayed notable veneer losses, now carefully restored as sympathetically and seamlessly as possible; minor evidence of previous damage remains on close inspection, consistent with age and use, and does not detract from the overall presentation.

    Chairs

    • All five chairs are sturdy with strong joints.
    • The original tan leather-cloth upholstery remains in good condition, retaining an attractive patina.
    • Expected age-related character is present, including light marks and small cracks on two seats, consistent with vintage materials and not distracting in use.
    • Wood surfaces show a warm tone and have been lightly rejuvenated.

Overall, the set presents beautifully — cohesive, elegant, and ready for everyday use.

Duros, established in 1904 represented Danish modern style in South Africa. The name Duros was a composite of the Latvian emigrant family name OSpovat and "DURablity".

The Duros furniture company opened it’s doors in Chapel Street, Woodstock in 1903, moved to Roeland Street in the 1930’s and remained there until it’s demise in the 1980’s. It had an impressive range of furniture

Duros founder Hyman Ospovat gave the company a slogan taken from John Keats: “A thing of beauty is a joy for ever”. Looking at how timeless his furniture pieces are, it’s rather accurate.

As with many quality Mid-Century pieces, this design thoughtfully pairs solid wood construction with a premium wood veneer—an approach widely used at the time to highlight beautiful grain patterns while ensuring lasting stability.
