G H Starck Ltd, South Africa
George Henry Starck, born in the east end of London in 1882, came from humble beginnings with a family background in making wooden musical instruments. In search of better prospects, he emigrated to South Africa in 1902, arriving in Cape Town during a deep depression following the Boer War. Despite early struggles, including living in his workshop, George's determination kept him going.
In 1911, George founded G H Starck Ltd, which grew into the largest furniture manufacturing company in South Africa and arguably the Southern Hemisphere. His success stemmed from his strong character, ethical business practices, and ability to attract talented craftsmen. George's commitment to innovation led him to travel abroad annually for two decades to stay ahead in manufacturing techniques.
During the interwar period, G H Starck Ltd expanded significantly, moving to a larger factory in Elsies River. George became a respected industrialist, holding directorships in several prominent companies and contributing to charitable causes.
In World War II, George served as a Deputy Director of War Supplies without pay, demonstrating his dedication to his adopted country. After the war, he resumed control of his company until illness forced him to step back in the early 1950s. George Henry Starck passed away in 1958, leaving behind a legacy of industrial and philanthropic achievements. The George and Annie Starck complex stands as a testament to his contributions to South Africa.
In 1959 G H Starck Ltd merged with brothers Derick and Owen Frye in 1959 to form Frystark Furniture which expanded to provided nation-wide distribution & dealerships.
